Junior Kindergarten
We believe in a holistic approach to learning during early childhood, and Junior Kindergarten at Christ Church Day School focuses on the social, emotional, physical, and cognitive development of young students. The Junior Kindergarten program at Christ Church Day School is a full day school experience for children who have typically completed a preschool program for 3 and 4 year-olds. Children must have turned 4 by September 1 of the current school year to be considered for enrollment in our Junior Kindergarten.
Our Junior Kindergarten program is taught in a small class setting by a certified teacher and an assistant teacher and an average class size of 14 students. This setting allows for many small group opportunities and one-on-one learning support. Daily lessons and activities encourage creative expression, exploration, and skill development.
The program is varied and is dependent on the students themselves, as learning is adapted to meet each child's needs and skill levels. Time is spent developing receptive and expressive language, gross and fine motor skills, and academic concepts. The classroom is academically integrated and literature rich. Stories, songs, poetry, and the children’s words, drawings, and writings are all incorporated into the learning environment. Time is also given for spiritual growth, both in the classroom and at Chapel. The Junior Kindergarten students attend Chapel every week with the rest of the student body and have additional specialty classes in Spiritual Nurture, Physical Education, Music, Library, and Spanish.
The Junior Kindergarten classroom is a community built on the CCDS Virtues of Belonging, Respect, Responsibility, Patience, Kindness, Honesty, Compassion, Forgiveness, and Generosity. The children are encouraged to express themselves and to listen to one another, especially when conflicts arise. Problem-solving skills and good sportsmanship are taught in a loving and nurturing environment. Activities that develop the students' speaking skills are also part of the daily routine. The children recite chants, learn songs together, and take turns speaking or sharing in front of the class. All of these activities promote social and academic growth and self-confidence.
